“As Is” is a site-specific exhibition inspired by Thrift Town, the second-hand store in the same building as Mission 17. McInnis has borrowed ‘great finds’ from local artists and other Mission residents, and interviewed them about their discoveries. She has also interviewed people who work at the store, and has shot video capturing its eclectic textures and patterns. The result is a show that presents the thrift store as a locus of meaning and social interaction, with its own logic and organizational structures.
Katherin McInnis has shown video and photography at SFMoMA Artists Gallery, California College of the Arts, and Southern Exposure. Her work has screened in the New York Film Festival, the Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Film Arts Festival. She lives in San Francisco, and descends from a long line of thrift store shoppers.
